Keep land. Share its benefit.

Community land trusts remove property from the speculative cycle and steward it for an agreed community purpose over the long term.

LAND IS A COMMUNITY ASSET

A community land trust is a community-led, non-profit organization that acquires and holds land and property in the interest of its local community.

CLTs are not limited to one tenure or one building type. Across Canada they steward affordable ownership homes, rentals, supportive housing, cooperative housing, community gardens, shops, studios, cultural amenities, and commercial space.

The central idea is simple: instead of allowing all of a property’s value to be extracted through resale or escalating rent, the trust protects an agreed purpose and keeps the benefit circulating locally.

01

Acquire

A property or interest in land enters the trust through purchase, donation, partnership, long-term lease, or another negotiated arrangement.

02

Protect

The asset is removed from speculative resale. Its purpose is secured through ownership, leases, agreements, covenants, and governance.

03

Steward

The trust supports the property and its users over time, balancing financial sustainability with the intended community benefit.

04

Reinvest

Value stays in the community. One well-stewarded asset can support many people, organizations, and generations.
